Happy Winter Solstice!

In nature winter is a time of quiet, stillness, and rejuvenation (a bit different than our holiday time ey?). The days are short and the nights long and dark. Animals are hibernating and surviving on little food. The trees have lost their leaves and have moved their energy (qi) deep down into the roots and core. Bulbs and seeds are beneath the earth in their dormant cycle waiting for the springtime's message of new life.

In our busy, modern, technological lives we often forget that we too are part of nature. We too have Winter energy that courses through us. In Five Element Medicine we call this kind of energy the Water Element. This energy creates our ability to rest, it gives us time and space for rejuvenation and builds our potential energy so that in Spring we can explode with new life just like the trees.

Emotionally, this phase of energy gives us our sense of power and will. It shows up as the emotions of Courage and Fear. Water represents our deep reserves of energy, our will to survive, and a trust in the universe. This energy also gives us the ability to move, flow, transform and change, just as water does on the Earth.

Physically, Water shows up as our Kidneys, The creator of energy and power in the body; and the Bladder, the reserves of this energy.

Spiritually, the Water energy gives us the ability to be still and quiet down. It gives us an opportunity to rest and rejuvenate so that, when needed, our energy will be abundant. Water gives us the will power and endurance to go through tough times with courage and the trust that everything will be okay.

In Five Element Medicine the goal is to keep the energy moving through this natural cycle of seasons. When it gets stuck thats when dis-ease, pain or upset occur. When the Water Element is out of balance you may feel excessive fear or a struggle to survive. You may experience low energy, deep fatigue, exhaustion, reduced sex drive, lack of trust and timidity. You may have kidney or bladder problems. hypertension, infertility and back pain.

When Water is in balance you have the gifts of wisdom, stillness, patience, potency, listening, and appropriate fear.

If you are really struggleing with this time of year remember that darkness is the place of growth. It is from a dark womb that we grow, the dark soil that our food grows and the dark places of our soul that we must travel through in order to grow as a person. This time of year provides the opportunity to nestle into that darkness and find the places that need a little bit of light shed on them. Its important to be patient and willing in this darkness, knowing that light will come! Light returns! As you may have had the opportunity to see last night, the Lunar eclipse was a profound example of how the shadow is inescapable, all consuming and FLEETING! If you're having a hard time, help yourself out by taking time for YOU. Hang in there, you'll make it through to a most magnificent spring.

If your Winter energy or Water element is feeling stuck here are a few practices that can help! Pick a couple and put them to action for this week and notice how it feels!
  • SLOW DOWN! We live in fast paced times. Sometimes its too fast for our nervous systems and we get overwealmed, stress out. Take advantage of the Winter Stillness and slow life down where you can. For this week, practice Slowness....driving slower, talk slower, move slower, eat slower, text slower =). notice what effect slowing down has on your life. Does it change your level of stress? If so think about it as a tool that can assist you when life is just too fast or too much!
  • MEDITATE Meditation gives us an awareness into ourselves like no other practice. Meditation can give us more space and more time and it can bring us to a deep balance like nothing else.
